Deltona Youth Soccer Loses Concession.
By: Brandon Kellogg Deltona, FL (February 6, 2010) -Deltona Youth Soccer Club received notice to remove all equipment owned by the club from the City owned Concession facility located at Dewey O. Boster Complex by February 15, 2010. The City of Deltona will now take possession of the facility. In a letter sent to Keith Caven, Deltona Youth Soccer Club President, the city notice outlined “the seriousness of the health and safety violations, some of which have been repetitive in nature” as the reason for this action.
On December 3, 2009, the Deltona Fire Department conducted an inspection of the Concession facility for fire and safety compliance and found several severe violations, including the use of a deep fryer without proper ventilation and a fire suppression unit. The inspection also outlined the improper use of several extension cords running throughout the building. A leading cause of electrical fires begins with the use of underrated extension cords being used improperly
During the follow-up inspection on January 5, 2010, one month later, the Fire Department discovered that none of the violations had been cured, and furthermore found that two exits signs had been damaged since the prior inspection.
Volusia County Health Department also conducted a routine inspection of the Concession Facility on January 14, 2010. The report outlined several major violations including: the need to clean the sinks, clean the hotdog machine, and clean the inside of the microwave and no proper hand washing equipment. Removal of the illegal deep fryer and garbage needed to be removed from the building along with several other violations. The health Department indicated on the unsatisfactory report that a revisit would be scheduled for January 21, 2010.
The Deltona Youth Soccer Club has had its share of problems since Keith Caven took over as President. Caven’s request that the City Commission remove the Deltona Youth Soccer Club Facility Use Agreement from the agenda during the October 5, 2009, commission meeting left the club operating on a month-to-month agreement with the city. Local parents question Caven’s intentions and the future of the club in general. “Registration fees doubled overnight,” said one parent who could not afford to register both of his children with the club because of the skyrocketing fees. Several other parents implied that Caven seemed to be “on a mission to destroy the organization and its’ membership”. Sources close to Deltona City Hall have indicated that the Florida Youth Soccer Association is considering pulling the Deltona Club’s charter. Caven is no stranger to controversy. In 1999 Caven filed suit against American Sports, Inc. and obtained a judgment for $4,999.99. Principles of American Sports, Inc. could not be contacted. Keith Caven could not be reached for comment.
Dewey O. Boster Sports Complex is considered the pride and joy of the Deltona Park System with a first-rate lighted Soccer Complex and football fields and is the home for many city events such as Relay for Life, Spooktacular and Fourth of July fireworks. The Soccer Complex and Deltona Youth Soccer were a dream that became reality with the hard work and vision of Charlie Vance, who partnered with the City of Deltona in developing one of the most successful leagues in the State of Florida.
